Medford Teen raises over $ 1,400 for this year’s polar dive
MEDFORD, NY – A teenage charity from Medford recently raised over $ 1,000 for a Polar Plunge event.
Emily Volpe competed in the Splish Splash Freezin For a Reason Polar Dive on April 17 which raised funds for local Special Olympics athletes.
The 15-year-old has participated in the event for five years in a row. However, this year she raised more money than ever for a total of $ 1,400 for the charity.
She attributes most of the fundraising to her family, who helped raise donations from local business owners, including sponsors of local real estate agent Stephen King and Donaldson Interiors.
Both have contributed over $ 250 to Volpe’s cause.
While Volpe was thrilled to take part in the event once again this year, the dive looked different due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to Volpe, normally everyone will both dive in the cold water, but this year everyone went separately, staying in the same small group.
This is not the teenager’s only charitable effort.
“Since elementary school, I’ve been into fundraising, so I was like, why don’t I do it? she said.
She also fundraises for her school’s musical she is a part of and also donates to the local Almost Home animal shelter. In addition, she raises funds for St. Judes, the Holtsville Ecology Center, the YMCA, Epilepsy Walks and Suicide Walks.
