Ilocos Sur Irrigation Project to Increase Farmers Productivity
LAOAG CITY – After 11 years of development, the PHP 631 million Barbar small reservoir irrigation project in San Juan, Ilocos Sur, is finally completed to increase the productivity of farmers in the region.
On May 6, beneficiary farmers from the 11 villages of San Juan and Magsingal attended its official inauguration, which was attended by provincial and local officials.
In a statement, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) said the project had a service area of 846 hectares for the benefit of 1,156 farmers and their families.
This project includes an earth dam with a capacity of 861,000 cubic meters. The dam is located on the other side of the Bical river.
“The access roads were built simultaneously with the side canals having the same length as the latter, providing mobility and accessibility to farmers and their agricultural inputs and products,” NIA said.
The agency said the structure will also help fight flooding in the area as it is able to store rainwater for irrigation.
At the inauguration, tilapia fry were also released into the reservoir to enhance food sustainability in the region.
“It is a great help for our farmers to improve their production of palay, corn, tobacco and vegetables,” said Ilocos Sur governor Ryan Singson, thanking the Duterte administration for the continuation of the implementation of its “Build, Build, Build” infrastructure program. across the country despite the current pandemic.
