CCRYN and PGIMER collaborate to promote Yoga through joint research projects

A “Collaborative Center for Mind and Body Interventions” through Yoga has been established by the “Central Council for Yoga and Naturopathy Research” (CCRYN), Delhi, and the Postgraduate Institute of Education and Research Center (PGIMER), Chandigarh, as a collaborative research center of PGIMER, Chandigarh, according to a CCRYN statement. Yoga research projects are jointly designed by CCRYN who will fund the projects while PGI Chandigarh will provide institutional approval, expertise and study subjects in addition to office space to house the research staff in its premises.

MP, Kirron Kher, has earmarked additional funds of around Rs 1 crore on MPLADS for the development of Yoga Center at PGI, Chandigarh. A request in this regard has been sent through his good offices to the Deputy Commissioner to release the funds in accordance with the procedures. Dr. Vivek Lal, Director, PGI, Chandigarh, thanked the MP for the grant, stating that this grant will help PGI generate rigorous evidence for various yoga intervention studies and promote holistic medicine. He praised Dr. Akshay Anand, head teacher of the yoga center for his efforts and pledged his full support to the upcoming center which will fund research studies on yoga.

The Center for Collaborative Yoga Research has already recruited 2 research officers and 2 yoga therapists who run daily yoga sessions for healthcare workers and also offer free yoga classes for patient attendants in addition to some patients referred by physicians. The MPLADS grant will be used to acquire state-of-the-art analytical and naturopathic equipment for future research projects. Dr. Anand informed that the director was considering a proposal from Harvard University to sign a memorandum of understanding with PGI for them to acquire yoga skills and expertise in yoga research. According to the CCYRN statement, the Collaborative Center already has world renowned visiting professors like Dr. HR Nagendra, Chancellor, S-VYASA, University of Bengaluru, Dr. NK Manjunath, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Director of Research, S-VYASA University, Bengaluru, Dr Jaideep Arya, President, Haryana Yog Aayog, Haryana, Dr BN Gangadhar, Former Director NIMHANS, Chairman, Medical Assessment and Rating Board National Medical Council (NMC) and Dr Elissa Epel, Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Vice Chair of Adult Psychology, University of California, San Francisco, USA, among others. It also publishes a Journal, Integrative Medicine Case Reports, containing the latest reports on evidence-based holistic medicine.

The 8th International Day of Yoga will be celebrated with enthusiasm at PGIMER for which the Yoga Center will deliver a training module to its teachers, staff and students through the Common Protocol of Yoga (Ministry of AYUSH). In addition, PGI is also planning to train the nodal people of all its departments in the 5-minute Yoga ‘Y-Break’ workplace as mandated by the Government of India. Special lectures by Dr. Sara W. Lazar, Associate Professor, Harvard General Hospital and Medical School and Dr. Jaideep Arya, President, Haryana Yog AaYog on “Yoga and the Brain” have been scheduled.
