Additional funded research projects following the CRA appeal process

The Australian Research Council (ARC) will support 6 more research scholarship projects under previously announced programs, after the conclusion of the ARC appeal process.

ARC Executive Director Professor Sue Thomas welcomed the approval by the Minister of Education and Youth, the Honorable Alan Tudge MP, of additional projects recommended for funding under the Discovery Award 2021 ARC Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) and 2022 ARC Future scholarship programs.

Prof Thomas said the projects were among 32 projects initially deemed ineligible in their grant rounds due to the inclusion of preprints in their applications, which was not allowed under their funding program rules in place at the time.

The result of the ARC Appeal Board was to declare them eligible, meaning that 6 projects that had been well ranked in the ARC grant evaluation process could then be recommended for funding by the ARC. CEO of ARC.

Existing funding is available in ARC’s funding programs to fund these 6 additional projects under the 2022 Future Fellowships and Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards 2021 programs, announced in August 2021.

The other 6 funded projects to start include:

  • Dr Ciaran O’Hare of the University of Sydney will lead a $ 419,845 DECRA project that aims to connect dark matter particles and astrophysics, to accelerate us towards its first detection in the lab.
  • Griffith University’s Dr Nora Tischler will lead a $ 433,182 DECRA project to advance quantum networking and computing to produce key resources for the quantum Internet of the future.
  • Dr Simon Stevenson of Swinburne University of Technology to lead a $ 421,540 DECRA project to uncover the astrophysical origin of gravitational waves, by calculating the properties of neutron stars and black holes using state-of-the-art simulations on supercomputers.
  • Dr Manisha Caleb of Swinburne University of Technology will lead a $ 435,000 DECRA project to use rapid radio bursts to study the nature of stars and matter outside of our galaxy.
